What is Iyengar Yoga? 

A study of both movement and stillness, Iyengar Yoga is practiced worldwide.

B.K.S Iyengar is acknowledged to have been the most skilled and knowledgeable modern practitioner of yoga. Through his own daily practice, he penetrated deeply into the art, science, and philosophy of yoga in order to develop a methodology that is steeped in tradition, practical application, and innovation. Mr. Iyengar also had the creative skill and ability to adapt and modify the postures for all levels of practitioners, regardless of age, and physical conditions, with the help of certain props such as bricks, belts and blankets. By working with the alignment of the physical body we can directly access and exercise the mental and emotional bodies as well. 

What can I expect from an Iyengar Yoga class?

Iyengar yoga classes are taught, not led. Teachers will demonstrate poses before guiding you into them, and they will move around the room while teaching, giving precise instructions and adjustments when necessary.

Iyengar Yoga classes usually begin with standing poses and then progress towards other categories of postures such as forward extensions, backbends, twists and inversions. No two class are alike. Teachers devise sequences of poses, which build skill and understanding, from posture to posture, and from class to class. This approach will help your understanding of the practice as well as help to keep you safe in the poses.

Each class ends with Savasana, corpse pose or deep relaxation. Students learn to rest in a profound way, completely releasing the body while drawing the mind towards the peace within.

​Iyengar Yoga teachers use their deep-seated knowledge of the asanas to individualize corrections for each student. Students know they are observed and, if necessary, adjusted. Clear demonstrations of the posture. A well-developed eye. Specific teaching points which awaken the body’s intelligence -- these are the marks of an Iyengar Yoga teacher.
A Certified Iyengar Yoga teacher can guide students of all ages and physical conditions to an experience of yoga, which is safe, accessible and rewarding.
